samurai
This was yesterday’s project, a 2’x3.5′ ink drawing on a scrap of canvas, modeled after the ukiyo-e prints of Japan. I spent a long time trying to find a good reference picture of someone holding a sword convincingly, and after all that ended up asking Nicholas to pose with our katana and act like he knew what he was doing. So… thank you Nick!
The original intention for this piece was to plaster it with cut-out flowers as a kind of ironic declaration of “I’m a badass samurai about to kill you, but I’m actually very fragile and sensetive once you get to know me.” I haven’t decided whether I want to go ahead and tackle the flowers again, or if I’d rather paint this one. We’ll see.

I think I’m in love…

I know that cool things can be done with this Photoshop thingy, I see fellow artists wield it admirably all the time – damnit, one day I’ll figure it out. This was a quick sketch and experiment done in response to the new Star Trek movie which I saw (and loved) a couple of nights ago. Simon Pegg may just be the next victim.
conjoined twins and a crazy cat lady
Here’s where this experiment stands at the moment, I added some stars and layered an ink doodle over the top. I think I’ll set it aside for a while and come back to it later.
Along the same theme, I present to you the world-famous jump-roping sisters:

I realize most of my figures are free-floating, and it’s a simple matter of me being to lazy to create a real background for them, so I decided that I’d try and see if I couldn’t build a convincing room. This one centers around a girl who likes cats… luckily her boyfriend doesn’t seem to mind…
I played around with this one a little bit, here are a couple alternate versions I came up with: the offset outline is really appealing to me, but there are only little bits of the green outline that I’m happy with.

In other news, I found out today that I recieved the Seth Dotson Memorial award from the art department: 30,000 Years of Art, by Phaidon: a book weighing somewhere around 10 pounds!! I was out of town during the awards ceremony, so it was an unexpected and exciting surprise!
